The longer you stay in this business the greater the chances are that you are going to get fired. The algorithm of the workplace today.

Sad but true. Don’t focus on the sad but anticipate and prepare for the true.

You may not believe this but I only report what I hear, see, and read in emails.

I got an email from a new friend the other day. They said they had watched one of my videos on “Why Agency Case Studies Are A Curse & A Blessing.”

My videos are produced by somebody who is 27 years old.

He was a copywriter and said he was aged out of the game.

I asked him how old he was and he said 51.

He felt that the ad game was currently for people aged 25 to 37.

I once read that the average age of a person in advertising was 34 years old.

What my new friend says is true. The advertising world has gone digital and gets younger and younger and younger every day.

The majority of jobs on LinkedIn in advertising are looking for energetic entry level marketing people.

Some postings are ludicrous like Junior Strategist. I am sure that clients won’t be exactly impressed by having a Junior Strategist lead them to the future.

Then there is automation. Third party ad services require less people to negotiate media placement. They also don’t provide good lunches.

So what do you need to do is first anticipate the future in the advertising, digital, public relations world.

You have to hedge your bets and only rely on you, never your employer.

So how do you create your own personal space where you would not be worried about a possible 3PM meeting with your boss and the HR person with an envelope for you?

First, you need to focus on your personal brand. You need to have your own business cards, website, and personal marketing materials ready to go.

You also need to freelance on the side or build your consulting practice on the side to build your expertise in working for yourself.

Focus on small clients or your network of friends that may need marketing help to get your toe in the water and learn a new path.

You can also promote a non-profit.

Many small companies don’t know anything about Social Media, SEO, or PR.

You can’t trust the future but you can trust yourself.

I know because I live in the future and my longest job has been working for myself and there’s a good chance I’m older than you. There is also a good chance that I have more online game than you because I learned how to create my future.

Now it is your turn.
